February 10, 2010

Khozema Chitalwala, is a name to be reckoned with in the hospitality segment of architecture, most of the well-known hotel chains bare the credentials of his firm, designers group

Khozema Chitalwala, one of the most reputed names in the hospitality architecture segment. He was one of the esteemed guests who dropped in for a visit during the “home-makeover festival” held at Marshalls Elite to celebrate the store’s first anniversary.

A distinguished architect who has been into interior designing and architecture since last 22 years, he has several outstanding projects to his credit. In an interesting conversation with Mona Menon, CEO, Marshalls he talks about his renowned firm, Designers Group, his specialization – hospitality architecture, wallpapers and other topics galore.

The firm, Designers Group that Khozema Chitalwala and his wife started 22 years ago is today a much sought after firm comprising of 43 members. Renowned players of the hospitality industry want their projects implemented by Designers Group. Khozema informs that they focus on hospitality architecture because it is more challenging and provides more leeway for creativity. He also claims that while executing a hotel project, an architect and interior designer has to consider several factors like the target audience, pricing, location, brand etc.

Talking about his USP, he says that it is “interior architecture”. It’s a term coined to express the fact that there is lot of interiors involved in any hotel project along with architecture. He also says that the experience and database that his firms bring to a project is also a USP.

He is very vocal in his support for wallpapers. He opines that now people have woken up to the possibilities of wallpapers. He also claims that soon there would be a demand shift from paints to wallpaper because of several reasons such as lack of skilled workers, quick application quality of wallpapers, range of designs, uniformity of texture and hygienic considerations.

He prefers to be personally involved with every project that his firm takes up but they handle only designing and nothing else. Thus, each project is a signature project but still can be easily distinguished as a project that came from Khozema Chitalwala’s stable. Elaborating on his firm’s specialties, he says it is the effective and innovative use of lighting, moreover he says that every project has an individual look and that no two projects resemble each other. Thus, Khozema Chitalwal is “THE’ name in the hospitality architecture arena since most of the major hotel chains in India bear his credentials.

Nice to read interviews of well know architects on this blog. I am a student of architecture. Do you think you can do a live webinar by these architects ? I am sure it would be very useful to artchitecture students
